Notice of Adopted Ordinance Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1972
Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1972(a)(1), the Town of Sheldon hereby provides notice of the terms of an ordinance adopted by the Selectboard of the Town on February 10, 2025. The adopted ordinance is entitled CODE OF ETHICS INVESTIGATION AND ENFORCEMENT ORDINANCE. 24 V.S.A. § 1997 requires the Town to adopt procedures to investigate complaints which allege that a municipal officer has violated the State’s Municipal Code of Ethics and the enforcement in instances of substantiated complaints. RIGHT OF THE VOTERS TO PETITION SELECTBOARD
The adopted ordinance may be disapproved by a vote of a majority of the qualified voters of the Town voting on the question at an annual or special meeting duly warned for the purpose, pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1973(b). A petition for a vote on the question of disapproving the ordinance adopted shall be signed by not less than five per cent of the qualified voters of the Town of Sheldon, and must be presented to the Selectboard or the Town Clerk within 44 days following the date on which the ordinance was adopted.
Pursuant to 24 V.S.A. § 1972(a)(2), if no such petition is filed, the ordinance shall become effective 60 days after the date of its adoption, or at such time following the expiration of 60 days from the date of its adoption as is determined by the Selectboard. If a petition is filed in accordance with Title 24, Section 1973, then the taking effect of the ordinance shall be governed by Section 1973(e).
